            Course Objectives In this course; relevant topics in pharmacology, medical microbiology, immunology, basic pathology and epidemiology will be discussed. This course aims to form a basis for the pathological phase where pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases, diagnosis and treatment will be learned.
            Learning Outcomes

            The students who succeeded in this course;

            • Explain the phases of drug development and their features, classification of the drugs; the drug and the body interaction and the factors altering this interaction
            • Describe the major determinants of infectious diseases, the links in the “chain of infection” and the role of correct diagnosis, treatment and appropriate infection control measures for breaking the links
            • Define the main microbiological features of medically important pathogens
            • Explain cellular and molecular components and associated mechanisms of innate and adaptive immune responses that protect our body from infections or cancer
            • Explain the causes and mechanisms of reversible, irreversible cell injury and cellular adaptation
            • Describe the mechanisms of inflammation, define its types and associated morphologic features
            • Define the mechanisms of tissue repair, the factors influencing the tissue repair, the differences between primary and secondary wound healing
            • Explain the mechanisms of hemodynamic disorders, thrombus, embolism, infarction and their morphological features
            • Define the shock types, their pathogenesis, morphological and clinical features
            • Explain the basic processes underlying the transformation of a normal cell to its malignant form, and the consequences of malignant transformation on the cellular and organism level
            • Define the basic nomenclature, morphologic characteristics, grading and staging of tumors, and the principles of tumor diagnosis and treatment.
            • Explicate the basic principles of imaging and clinical laboratory methods and their clinical applications.
            • Define the characteristics of different stages of healthy life from childhood to the end-of-life, the lifecycle related health risks and preventive measures
            • Explain how the basic concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics are applied to causal factors for health problems.
            • Evaluate their own reflection, self-assessment and feedback skills, identify their strengths and weaknesses, create a development plan for the aspects that need to be improved, and present the portfolio evidences in a file.
            Course Description • Basic principles of pharmacology including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics • Basic concepts of infection, infection control, pathogenesis and microbiology of medically important microorganisms • Molecular and cellular components and pathways of innate and adaptive immune responses against infections or cancer. • Injurious agents interfering with homeostasis • The concept and mechanisms of disease and corresponding alterations occurring in the body • The impact of biopsychosocial and cultural factors on human health • General features of the related laboratory and clinical diagnostic procedures. • Changing health needs and challenges along the human life cycle and prepare them to anticipate and address the health issues at different stages of life in the clinical setting. • Basic principles of therapy.
